Do you love mushroom too?

Hermes mushroom leather, could be the one that bring leather mushroom into the light of people’s attention. It is said that this plant-based leathers option have the potential to revolutionize the fashion industry.

According to Smithsonian Magazine , MycoWorks, a California-based biotech company, has created a new eco-friendly, vegan leather derived from fungi. The leather turns mycelium—threads from the root structure of mushrooms—into a material that imitates the look and feel of animal-based leather, reports Jess Cartner-Morley for the Guardian.

“It’s the first time that a company is able to produce a vegetal product which is matching or even exceeding the quality and durability and aesthetics of a natural one. It’s a super achievement,” Patrick Thomas, former Hermés CEO and a MycoWorks board of directors member, said in a statement.

How sustainable is Leather Mushroom?

Accoding to The Vou, the making process of mushroom leather fits the circular economy which is fully sustainable.

This natural fiber is biodegradable at the end of its life cycle. In this process, organic waste streams, such as agricultural waste, are valorized. This mushroom leather can reduce the need for industrial animal agriculture.

Last but not least, leather mushroom is Closed-loop system.

Thus, this mushroom leather is considered sustainable option to leather alternative!

Fashion brand Salvatore Ferragamo launched an upcycled collection, with 2022 auspicious tiger print!

Did upcycled or recycled fashion always sounds cheap and old?

No its not neccessarily have to be like that way!

And we are glad that, the fashion industry is taking the lead in embracing circular economy, and launching upcycled collection.

Here it is from Salvatore Ferragamo!

Salvatore Ferragamo launches 300-piece upcycled collection Icon-Up

Italian luxury house Salvatore Ferragamo has continued their pledge towards sustainability by releasing a limited edition capsule called Icon-Up of upcycled shoes and belts.

This upcycled collection is launched on Farfetch.com.The 3oo piece collection is created in Italy using entirely upcycled materials from Ferragamo’s archives and inventory, resulting in a unique capsule where each style is one-of-a-kind.

The house 2 iconic shoe styles, such as the Varina and Vara shoes utilise existing materials and products from their inventory that might’ve otherwise gone used. When it came to selecting the prints for the shoes and belts, the inspiration traces back to the exhibit at the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence, Italy.

AND tiger? Tigers have always been an important part of Ferragamo’s world, and with the Year of the Tiger, 2022, quickly approaching, perhaps it’s the time to get some festive gear.

Salvatore Ferragamo
Aside from it’s aesthetic importance, each tiger print is digitally printed with silk onto the shoe’s upper, a method that limits waste.

How Salvatore Ferragamo upcycle the collection?

  1. All the shoes utilized in the collection were pulled from the brand’s inventory, along with the silk fabric used for the bows that grace the shoes and belts. As many of the accessories from the inventory had to be deconstructed, repurposed, and then reconstructed again to create the beloved Vara and Varina silhouettes, thus its a tedious work and requires intensive craftmanship.
  2. Another highlight of this collection is the silk bows, which are included on both the shoes and belts. These bows were created from repurposed silk that was recovered from foulards, ties, pochettes, and stoles from the Ferragamo archive. To turn these accessories into bows, and give them a second life, each silken piece had to be deconstructed by artisans and reworked into the elegant yet undone bow shapes we see in the capsule.
  3. Each style from the Icon-Up capsule collection comes packaged in a reusable drawstring bag created from upcycled fabrics, and a box made from recycled materials.

How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land?

orange sky

In 1854, the United States Government aggressively offered to buy 2 million acres of land occupied by native people  in the Northwest.  Below is a translation of excerpts from Chief Seattle’s (Chief Sealth) reply to President Franklin Pierce in December of that year.

His speech has been described as one of the most beautiful and prophetic statements on the environment ever made.

“The Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land.  The Great Chief also sends us words of friendship and good will.  This is kind of him, since we know he has little need of our friendship in return.  But we will consider your offer.

How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land?  The idea is strange to us.  If we do not own the freshness of the air and sparkle of the water, how can you buy them ?

Every part of this earth is sacred to my people.  Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing, and every humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people.  The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man.   So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us…”

“This we know:  All things are connected.  Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth.  Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it.  Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.  But we will consider your offer to go to the reservation you have for my people.  We will live apart, and in peace….”

“If we agree, it will be to secure the reservation you have promised.  There, perhaps, we may live out our brief days as we wish.  When the last red man has  vanished from the earth, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, these shores and forests will still hold the spirits of my people.   For they love this earth as the newborn loves its mother’s heartbeat.  So, if we sell our land, love it as we’ve loved it. Care for it as we have cared for it.  Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you take it.  And preserve it for your children…”

From: Children of the Earth

Chief Seattle’s Letter

Ancient letter

“The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.

The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water’s murmur is the voice of my father’s father.

The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.

Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.

When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?

We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother’s heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.

As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you.

One thing we know – there is only one God. No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart. We ARE all brothers after all.”

The guide to 101 Zero Waste lifestyle

planting green grass

According to Wikipedia, Zero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused.

The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.  The definition adopted by the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA)is:

Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse and recovery of all products, packaging, and materials, without burning them, and without discharges to land, water or air that threaten the environment or human health.

How to start practice ZERO WASTE?

According to Center For EcoTechnology, Zero Waste is a movement to reduce the amount one consumes and consequently throws away.

Adopting a Zero Waste lifestyle is one of the most sustainable ways of living. Zero Waste lifestyle choices influence all environmental areas by preventing resource extraction, reducing the amount of materials thrown or trash awat, and reducing pollution from producing, transporting, or disposing of materials.

Paula and Nairn started their zero waste journey 5 years ago after watching the ‘Trashed’ documentary. They immediately started reducing their waste by swapping items like plastic toothbrushes for bamboo ones. They admit that it can be challenging, especially with kids and pets, but they’re determined to continue reducing their waste and making it easier for others to do the same. They started off by sharing resources online, progressed to selling zero waste items at local markets, and finally opened a brick-and-mortar zero waste store in Victoria, BC nearly 3 years ago. Let’s watch the video below:

Zero Waste is often shown as something not easily accessible, or nearly impossible – but it’s actually very easy to take simple steps toward Zero Waste or Less Waste at first. In fact, when you adopting a Zero Waste lifestyle, it can also means a more affordable lifestyle. Composting, buying second-hand, sharing when you can, or packing your own lunch are all simple steps you can take toward Zero Waste, all while saving money too!

There are a variety of ways one can start practice Zero Waste habits, remember one step at a time! You can start by reducing waste first and slowly adopting to a more sustainable ZERO WASTE eventually.

The guide to 101 Zero Waste lifestyle:

  • 4R (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle + Refuse)
  • Reduce what we use
  • Reuse what no longer works, by convert it to other means or purposes)
  • Recycle when all previous options have been explored.
  • Refuse what we do not need (for example, opt for strawless when dine in at restaurant, refuse for plastics packaging instead bring your own shopping bag!)

The future of Green technology in Malaysia

Green screen

According to MPDI, sustainable development means less environmental damage and is driven by comprehensive and all-encompassing policies, in national and international level to take into account the needs of future generations. Among these policies, several suggest employing green technologies.

Green technology defined

The definition from Investopedia, Green technology or the short form as green tech refers to a type of technology that is considered environmentally friendly based on its production process or its supply chain.

Solar panel
Green technology can refer to clean energy production; clean energy production is the use of alternative fuels and technologies that do less damage to the environment than fossil fuels.

Green Technology is used to describe the use of technology and science to create products and services that are environmentally friendly. Green tech is related to cleantech, which specifically refers to products or services that improve operational performance while also reducing costs, energy consumption, waste, or negative effects on the environment.

The goal of green tech is to protect the environment, repair damage done to the environment in the past, conserve natural resources and preserve the natural resources.

The use of green tech can be a stated goal of a business segment or a company. These goals are typically outlined in a company’s environmental, sustainability, and governance (ESG) statement, or can even be found in the mission statement of a firm. Increasingly, socially responsible investors are looking to narrow down their prospective investments to only include companies that specifically employ or produce green technologies.

Examples of Green Technology

  • Recycling

Green technology is used in the recycling process. Recyclable material can be used when manufacturing plastics, fertilizer, and fuel. Green technology can also be a part of the production process, such as processes to recycle water or related to waste management.

  • Clean Water

Green tech is used to purify the water resources. In some places where there are scarce water resources, green technologies can be applied to purify dirty water or remove salt from seawater in order to increase the availability of clean drinking water.

  • Clean Air

Green tech is used in processes that purify the air by reducing carbon emissions and gases that are released into the air.

  • Energy

Green tech can be used in processes intended to conserve energy, and to create alternative fuel sources that are more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. Fossil fuels create waste as a byproduct of their production. For example, solar, wind, and hydroelectric dams are green technology that are safer for the environment and don’t produce waste by-products. Besides the environmental benefits, these alternatives can also be used to power a home or a utility power plant.

Green technology in Malaysia

According to The Edge Market, “In 2015, Malaysia agreed to cut 45% of GHG emissions by 2030 in the Paris Agreement. The awareness about the problem is present and more players are participating in the industry now,” says Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) CEO.

Overview of MGTC

Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) is an agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) mandated to drive the country in the scope of Green Growth, Climate Change Mitigation and Green Lifestyle.

Three national policies, particularly the National Green Technology Policy (NGTP), the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) and the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP), regulated MGTC’s role as a catalyst for green economic growth.

MGTC implements initiatives and programs that provide specific details in achieving the long -term impact of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by 45% based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to the intensity of emissions in 2005 by 2030, increasing the rate GDP from green technology of RM100 Billion and the generation of 230,000 green jobs.

MGTC performs 3 roles as follows:

  1. Mainstreaming the Green Economy through green product and service expansion programs such as the MyHIJAU Mark Certification Program. The Green Technology Financing Scheme (GTFS) & Green Technology Investment Tax Exemption (GITE) as well as training and human capital development schemes.
  2. Drive climate change mitigation actions such as advocacy for energy efficiency and renewable energy, low carbon urban programs and low carbon mobility
  3. Cultivate a green lifestyle through publicity and awareness programs in fostering cooperation between the government and private sectors in the global-scale platform such as International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) program and other public programs physically or through social media.

A big “cleanup” in China’s entertainment industry, here’s the good things about this!

What happened to the China’s entertainment industry in 2021?

According to Financial Times, China’s anti-corruption watchdog has hit out the country’s entertainment industry. Beware of tittytainment!

This is because Beijing tightens its grip on online celebrity culture and widens the scope of a crackdown on wealth and big business. The Chinese entertainment crackdown followed the launch of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s push for “common prosperity”, which aims to more widely distribute wealth after a series of regulatory interventions strengthened the party’s control over the private sector.

A statement posted on the website of China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection cited a wave of “negative news” and singled out several celebrities, including former Prada ambassador Zheng Shuang, who is accused of tax evasion, and Canadian-Chinese star Kris Wu, who was recently arrested on suspicion of rape, and more recently Zhao Wei! And there are some on the list…..

It looks like the Chinese State is not tolerating and is not planning to stop this wave of “clean-up”!

Zhao Wei
Chinese actress Zhao Wei, who is known as “Xiao Yan Zi” has been scrubbed off from social and media platforms.

According to Independent, Weibo scraps celebrity lists after Chinese state condemns ‘irrational fan’ culture.

Resolve the “chaos”

The watchdog’s comments came after China’s internet regulator set out a list of 10 measures to address issues in the sector, adding that it would “resolve the problem of chaos” in online fan culture, which it said was having a negative impact on young people.

Kris Wu
Canadian-Chinese pop star Kris Wu was arrested on suspicion of rape earlier this year.

Some of the measures included banning online celebrity popularity rankings and regulating companies that work with them and the fan merchandise sales. This also include a move to reduce after-work drinking in response to rising outrage over sexual assault cases after a scandal at ecommerce giant Alibaba this month. TV shows are also no longer allowed to charge fans to vote for their idols in popular competitions.

The lucrative economy of China’s entertainment industry

The fan economy is a driving force in China’s entertainment industry. The size of the local idol market was Rmb100 billion ($US15.4 billion) last year, according to government figures as reported by Financial Review.

There are ~20 million active fans on social media platform Weibo alone, a lucrative market for the Chinese idols. These avid fans splurge on concerts, merchandise and streaming music, and their spending determines the commercial value of stars.

The so-called clean-up will protect children, says the government. But it will also limit the influence of popular celebrities and reduce Beijing’s censorship workload.

Will we see the drop in tittytainment?

It is certainly too early to judge or have the answer, but it looks like this is gaining momentum! And something to look forward to!

How to Avoid a Climate Disaster?

protest on global warming

We all know that Malaysia is blessed with its strategic location in the region with the west of Peninsular Malaysia borders the Straits of Malacca, and the east of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah & Sarawak border the South China Sea.

Malaysia is generally free from severe natural disasters such as earthquake, volcanic eruption and typhoon. Indeed, most Malaysian lived their entire life in Malaysia, with little alertness or disaster planning on these natural disasters.

However, the recent extreme weather in the country has also posed another questions:

Are we free and safe now?

Is global warming real?

Is climate change real?

And if climate change is happening now?

According to Floodlist, there is more flooding has affected parts of Peninsular Malaysia, prompting over 8,000 people to evacuate their homes.

For example, the recent flash flood is Kedah, or East Malaysia – Sabah & Sarawak!

How to Avoid a Climate Disaster?

The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need is a 2021 book by Bill Gates — How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.

Bill Gates books
How to Avoid a Climate Disaster?

In this book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, Bill Gates presents what he learned in over a decade of studying climate change and investing in innovations to address global warming and recommends strategies to tackle it.

According to GoodReads, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical and accessible plan for how the world and everyone can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe.

The causes and effects of climate change

In fact, Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. Bill Gates has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet’s slide toward certain environmental disaster, with the help of many experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance.

In this book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, he explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, as well as the details of what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal.

Bill Gates gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations.

At last, Bill Gates lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions-suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise.

Bill Gates has makes it clear that achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

No one is safe until everyone is safe!

We are the global citizen, even though we are claimed to be “safe” from natural disasters, but..

No one is safe until everyone is safe! Just like the case of COVID-19!
