Green Technology is defined as the development and application of products, equipment and systems used to
conserve the natural environment and resources, which minimises and reduces the negative impact of human activities.

Therefore sustainable development is the development that uses green technology or prioritise green technology. In Malaysia,  Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) is an agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) mandated to drive the country in the scope of Green Growth, Climate Change Mitigation and Green Lifestyle in Malaysia.

MGTC performs three (3) roles as follows:

  1. Mainstreaming the Green Economy through green product and service expansion programs such as the MyHIJAU Mark Certification Program. The Green Technology Financing Scheme (GTFS) & Green Technology Investment Tax Exemption (GITE) as well as training and human capital development schemes.
  2. Drive climate change mitigation actions such as advocacy for energy efficiency and renewable energy, low carbon urban programs and low carbon mobility
  3. Cultivate a green lifestyle through publicity and awareness programs in fostering cooperation between the government and private sectors in the global-scale platform such as International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) program and other public programs physically or through social media.

According to Wikipedia, Zero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused.

The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.  The definition adopted by the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA)is:

Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse and recovery of all products, packaging, and materials, without burning them, and without discharges to land, water or air that threaten the environment or human health.

How to start practice ZERO WASTE?

According to Center For EcoTechnology, Zero Waste is a movement to reduce the amount one consumes and consequently throws away.

Adopting a Zero Waste lifestyle is one of the most sustainable ways of living. Zero Waste lifestyle choices influence all environmental areas by preventing resource extraction, reducing the amount of materials thrown or trash awat, and reducing pollution from producing, transporting, or disposing of materials.

Paula and Nairn started their zero waste journey 5 years ago after watching the ‘Trashed’ documentary. They immediately started reducing their waste by swapping items like plastic toothbrushes for bamboo ones. They admit that it can be challenging, especially with kids and pets, but they’re determined to continue reducing their waste and making it easier for others to do the same. They started off by sharing resources online, progressed to selling zero waste items at local markets, and finally opened a brick-and-mortar zero waste store in Victoria, BC nearly 3 years ago. Zero Waste is often shown as something not easily accessible, or nearly impossible – but it’s actually very easy to take simple steps toward Zero Waste or Less Waste at first. In fact, when you adopting a Zero Waste lifestyle, it can also means a more affordable lifestyle. Composting, buying second-hand, sharing when you can, or packing your own lunch are all simple steps you can take toward Zero Waste, all while saving money too!

History of Smart Cities

The 1st Generation > Technology

The concept of smart cities began as far back as the 1960s and 1970s when the US Community Analysis Bureau began using databases, aerial photography and cluster analysis to collect data, direct resources and issue reports in order to direct services, mitigate against disasters and reduce poverty. This led to the first generation of smart cities.

The 2nd Generation > Technology + Innovation

The first generation of smart city was delivered by technology providers to “understand” the implications of technology on daily life. Then, this led to the second generation of smart city, which looked at how smart technologies and other innovations could create joined-up municipal solutions.

The 3rd Generation > Public and social inclusion

The third generation of smart city took the control away from technology providers and city leaders, instead creating a model that involved the public and introduce social inclusion and community engagement.

This third generation model was adopted by Vienna, who created a partnership with the local Wien Energy company, allowing citizens to invest in local solar plants as well as working with the public to resolve gender equality and affordable housing issues. Such adoption has continued around the world, including in Vancouver, where 30,000 citizens co-created the Vancouver Greenest City 2020 Action Plan.

How Smart Cities work?

Smart cities follow 4 steps with the aims to improve the quality of life and enable economic growth through a network of connected IoT devices and other technologies.

These 4 steps are as follows:

1. Collection – Smart sensors gather real-time data

2. Analysis – The data is analysed to gain insights into the operation of city services and operations

3. Communication – The results of the data analysis are communicated to decision makers

4. Action – Action is taken to improve operations, manage assets and improve the quality of city life for the residents

There are a range of Smart City models, actors and technologies andevery city customises these to their unique needs.

Malaysia Smart City Framework (MSCF)

From MyGOV, there is a framework which is Malaysia Smart City Framework (MSCF) that serves as a guide and reference to Local Authorities as city manager, state governments, federal ministries and departments, industry players, academician and other stakeholders in planning and developing smart cities in Malaysia holistically and in line with the current developments.

The document includes the smart city definition in the context of Malaysia, 7 key components of smart city, policy directions and outlines the proposed strategies and initiatives for each component that can be  a reference to those interested in implementing smart city initiatives in Malaysia.

Definitions and Components of Smart City

In the Malaysian context, smart city is defined as a city that uses ICT and technology and innovation advances to address urban issues including to improve the quality of life, promote economic growth, develop sustainable and safe environment and encourage efficient urban management practices.

Smart city Malaysia aims at addressing urban issues and challenges towards achieving then three main pillars of competitive economy, sustainable environment and enhanced quality of life.

The 7 major components of smart city Malaysia are:

  1. Smart Economy
  2. Smart Living
  3. Smart Environment
  4. Smart People
  5. Smart Government
  6. Smart Mobility; and
  7. Smart Digital Infrastructure

What is the Way Forward in Malaysia?

Smart cities is the new development trend observed in many countries around the world, and of course in Malaysia. Some cities that are active in implementing smart city strategies include Amsterdam, Barcelona, Seoul, Stockholm, Singapore, Phuket and Jakarta. Therefore, the development of smart cities in a planned, integrated and holistic manner in this country is important to ensure that Malaysia is at par with the global urban development trends.

21 days habit timeline, what is the one thing that you persevere for more than 21 days?

We can find that from James Clear’s blog on the 21 days habit story by Dr. Maxwell Maltz.

Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon in the 1950s when he began noticing a strange pattern among his patients.

When Dr. Maltz would perform an operation for example a nose job, he found that it would take the patient about 21 days to get used to seeing their new face. This is the same when a patient had an arm or a leg amputated, the patient would sense a phantom limb for about 21 days before adjusting to the new situation.

These experiences prompted Maltz to think about his own adjustment period to changes and new behaviors, and he noticed that it also took himself about 21 days to form a new habit. Maltz wrote about these experiences and said, “These, and many other commonly observed phenomena tend to show that it requires a minimum of about 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to jell.”

In 1960, Maltz published that quote and his other thoughts on behavior change in a book called Psycho-Cybernetics. The book went on to become an blockbuster hit, selling more than 30 million copies.

The question is how true is this?

To be frank, we don’t know the answer unless we try it!

So, why not take this as a challenge to head the sustainability lifestyle or sustainable habits at home?

The myth of making habits and breaking habits:

The habit formation is said as a function of three key criteria:

(1) Level of Commitment

(2) Internal and External Accountability

(3) Size of the Habit

The Secret is START NOW!

After all, it depends on individual on hwo long it takes to make or break a habit. At the end of the day, you have to put it to work, no excuses, no delay or whatsoever~

The only way to get to the END is to start with the 1st DAY. So forget about the days and focus on doing the work.

Brian Tracy has shared the 7 steps on how to develop a habit, you may check out below:

1) Make A Decision

First, make a decision. Decide clearly that you are going to begin acting in a specific way 100% of the time, whenever that behavior is required. For example, if you decide to arise early and exercise each morning, set your clock for a specific time, and when the alarm goes off, immediately get up, put on your exercise clothes and begin your exercise session.

2) Never Allow An Exception To Your New Habit

Second, never allow an exception to your new habit pattern during the formative stages. Don’t make excuses or rationalizations. Don’t let yourself off the hook. If you resolve to get up at 6:00 AM each morning, discipline yourself to get up at 6:00 AM, every single morning until this becomes automatic.

3) Tell Others You Are Practicing A New Behavior

Third, tell others that you are going to begin practicing a particular behavior. It is amazing how much more disciplined and determined you will become when you know that others are watching you to see if you have the willpower to follow through on your resolution.

4) Visualize Your New Habit

Fourth, visualize yourself performing or behaving in a particular way in a particular situation. The more often you visualize and imagine yourself acting as if you already had the new habit, the more rapidly this new behavior will be accepted by your subconscious mind and become automatic.

5) Create An Affirmation

Fifth, create an affirmation that you repeat over and over to yourself. This repetition dramatically increases the speed at which you develop the new habit. For example, you can say something like, “I get up and get going immediately at 6:00 AM each morning!” Repeat these words the last thing before you fall asleep. In most cases, you will automatically wake up minutes before the alarm clock goes off, and soon you will need no alarm clock at all.

6) Resolve To Persist

Sixth, resolve to persist in the new behavior until it is so automatic and easy that you actually feel uncomfortable when you do not do what you have decided to do.

7) Reward Yourself

Seventh, and most important, give yourself a reward of some kind for practicing in the new behavior. Each time you reward yourself, you reaffirm and reinforce the behavior. Soon you begin to associate, at an unconscious level, the pleasure of the reward with the behavior. You set up your own force field of positive consequences that you unconsciously look forward to as the result of engaging in the behavior or habit that you have decided upon.

3. Cook at home, if possible

Restaurants tend to serve our food in portions that are more than we can finish, or just to serve each individual. The high servings could cause a lot of food waste.

We have more control of the portions we consume when we cook at home, such as through meal prepping. Nonetheless, if you want to eat out, try to tabao what you don’t finish for another meal at home.

4. Use reuseable bag

BYOC or just bring a reusable bag with you, or place the reusable bag in your car so that you can always take these with you when you are out for groceries shopping. This could help to save tonnes of single use plastics and save the environment.

5. Buy in Bulk

Packaging requires manufacturing that releases carbon in the atmosphere. Then, once these packaging ends up being wasted in landfills which pollutes our air, water, and soil.

By choosing to buy items in bulk or refill pack, you’re reducing the amount of excessive packaging and decreasing the damage to our environment. It will even save you more money.

6. Grow your own food

Growing your own food can help you limit the amount of times you drive out for groceries. Besides this also encourage your family to eat less meat. Additionally, the plants will help to absorb more carbon as well.

The production of meat is one of the biggest contributors to climate change and the pollution. By eating less of it, you can help to reduce the impact the meat industry has on the Earth.

7. Recycle, Recycle and Recycle

We cannot emphasize more on the importance of recycling, and to make recycling the habit or your lifestyle. Recycling helps to reduces the need for extracting raw materials which cause air and water pollution, and climate change.

8. Turn off the lights when not using

Remember to always turn off the lights at home when you’re not using them. The same applies to any electronics appliances as well.

You can choose to use the natural light throughout the day as long as you can until you need to turn on the lights. This will reduce your energy use and could turn into money saving.

9. Buy local food

Choosing to buy locally and in season helps reduce the amount of shipping done to supply foods worldwide or out of season. Think about the logistics of shipping all those exported foods or out of season foods. By buying local produce, you also helps to support your local farmers.

10. Use less air conditioning

Air conditioning can be responsible for up to half the energy used in your home. There are a few things you can do to avoid using it that often. For example, use less energy and that could release less heat indoor, thus you won’t feel that hot all the time.

BYOC! Bring Your Own Container!

BYOC  or Bring Your Own Container is an easy way to reduce waste and to embark on eco-journey.

This include carrying your own tote to the supermarket or groceries shopping, or bringing your tiffin container, tumbler when takeaway. The BYOC concept is to ecnourage consumers to bring own jars, bottles or any packaging materials etc. This will save a lot of waste created by disposable containers, disposable cutlery, and disposable cups.

The BYOC concept was first introduced in 2006 by the award-winning London store Unpackaged.

Next time, just remember to:
bring your own container, and ask the restaurant to fill it! You would be surprise, they might be a bit surprised at first, but they will happily do it 😉

Accoriding to US Health Department, most adults need 7 or more hours of good-quality sleep on a regular schedule each night.

Getting enough sleep isn’t only about total hours of sleep. It’s also important to get good-quality sleep on a regular schedule so you feel energetic when you wake up.

4. Eat healthy diet

Our body need the right food and nutrient to perform. Learning to eat right and eat a balanced and heatly diet can avoid many health problems in the future.

Every day, work on 3-4 essential (and small) tasks that will bring you closer to your weekly and yearly goals.

6. Manage your money wisely

Financial planning or finacial education sounds like an alien to you? Go get the financial knowledge course or class to get your finances on track.

Start by saving a porportionate of your income for example 10%. Saving is not about how much. It’s about how often. You can save by cutting out useless things you do daily or weekly. For eg you don’t need to buy a latte in that fancy cafe every day.

7. Practice kindness and love

You can start by performing a random simple act of kindness. Trust me, you’ll feel better about yourself, as well as life in general, when you get into the excellent habit of kindness and love.

According to Adam Eason, be present.  Find the joy in life.  Center yourselves to ride out the storms when they come, because being present through the storms allows you to be present for the joy, innovation, and peace that follow.

Accoridng to Deloitte report, In Malaysia, more than 74% of population lives in cities and over 90% of national economic activity is conducted in cities.

During 2010-2015, the total population grew at an annual rate of more than 1.8 % per annum where urban growth was around 2.66 %. It is predicted that urbanization will further outpace population growth so that by 2030 about 82% of the population will live in urban areas.

Challenges in Malaysia

Malaysia are also faced with numerous climate change challenges that threaten the ability of these urban areas to become viable pillars of sustainable development.

The rapid increase in GHG emissions in cities has been further aggravated by:

  • rapid urbanization and industrialization (7% per annum),
  • relatively high carbon intensity dependence on fossil fuels and coal, and
  • poor public transportation system and
  • high demand of mobility caused rapid increase of cars compared to population growth.

How to live a more sustainabile lifestyle
